4 Tips for Using Digital Wallets on UK Websites

4 Tips for Using Digital Wallets on UK Websites

When you used to spend money online years ago, there used to only be one way to pay, and that was by credit/debit card. This would involve, as you probably remember, although some of you may not, having to enter in your card details each and every time. Not only was this time consuming, but having to enter all of your details, including the 16-digit card number and your three numbers on the back, of course leaves a lot of people feeling anxious and exposed.

It’s becoming ever more frequent that you hear stories of people having their personal details stolen online and their bank accounts ransacked and emptied. Whereas if you use a digital wallet next time you’re playing at an online casino found at casinos.com, a clothes retailer or fast food outlet, it means that it’s not the case where you have to enter your PIN or other personal info related details. And now we’re going to give you four tips on using a digital wallet.

Know about the different types of wallets.

Believe it or not, you may think a digital wallet is just a digital wallet. But, in fact, there are different types of digital wallets. And what we mean by this is they are classified as open, semi-open, or closed. Open, as the name suggests, means that they can be used anywhere and everywhere, and it’s not restricted to certain online merchants; a fine example of this is PayPal. Semi-closed wallets are not as flexible, and instead you’ll only be able to use them at a certain set of merchants, and finally closed wallets are very specific wallets that can only be used with a single merchant.

Look at the compatibility.

With this second tip, what we mean by compatibility is whether or not you can use it by your preferred means or wherever you are in the world. The vast majority of countries around the world support most of the digital wallets available. However, sometimes you may live in a country that doesn’t support the concept of digital wallets full-stop. Likewise, the currency that you use and trade in may not be supported by digital wallets if it is really obscure. Additionally, depending on how old your smartphone is, you may not be able to use a mobile app that has been designed for it, thus decreasing your security.

Check their customer support options.

This is a useful tip that is applicable not only to digital wallets but also any other services that you use. There is nothing more frustrating or concerning when you bump into trouble or have a concern and there is nobody to turn to to ask for help or guidance. And it’s the exact same when it comes to digital wallets. You’re going to want to make sure that you do some research and look at some reviews in order to try and understand what their customer service is really like. For those that don’t have good ratings, you’re going to want to proceed with caution.

Look at how much it is going to cost you.

Finally, the last tip we’re going to give you is to look at the transaction fees associated with the digital wallet that you’re considering. Fees can be applied in a number of scenarios when you’re using a digital wallet. Sometimes through foreign exchange rates if you’re wanting to use a different currency. You may also be charged a small fee for each transaction you make or for accounts in certain countries in the world.

And for example, if you’re a business or if you’re routinely making large payments, this could possibly be something that could get really expensive, and so always make sure that you do your homework and find this out so that you can then anticipate how much money you need to leave to one side or how much money in total it’s going to cost you daily, weekly, or even monthly to use this specific digital wallet.

In Summary

Ideally, we’re hoping you now have a very clear idea as to what digital wallets are and what the benefits are of using them over using a standard credit/debit card when you’re either buying products or services online or even if you’re wanting to deposit into your favourite online casino.

There are plenty of options out there when it comes to choosing a digital wallet, as there is a lot of demand for them, mainly thanks to the benefits that we have mentioned today. And so when there is so much choice, you’re going to want to utilise the tips that we’ve given you today in order to get yourself a shortlist of digital wallets and then make your final decision from there. It’s always important to make as informed a decision as you can when it comes to anything financial.

About Corinne

I'm Corinne, a full-time blogger from York who left my day job after building a side hustle income from scratch during maternity leave. I started Mum Making Money in 2021 to document what actually worked — and what didn't — when it came to money-making apps, cashback, side hustles and saving as a mum. Everything I write about, I've tested myself. I'm not a financial adviser, but I've had the payouts (and the disappointments) to back up what I recommend. You can also find me at skinnedcartree.com.
