PIP Application Guide UK 2025: How to Apply for Personal Independence Payment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is one of those benefits loads of people are entitled to but don’t claim.

Maybe you don’t think you’re “disabled enough.” Maybe the application seems scary. Maybe you don’t even know it exists.

I know someone who struggled for two years before applying for PIP. When she finally did, she got the enhanced rate of both components – £737 per month. That money changed her life.

If you have a health condition or disability that affects your daily life, you might be entitled to PIP. And I’m going to show you exactly how to apply.

What Is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability.

It’s NOT means-tested (your savings don’t matter) and you can get it whether you work or not.

Two components:

  1. Daily Living – if you need help with daily tasks
  2. Mobility – if you have difficulty getting around

You can get one component, both, or neither depending on how your condition affects you.

Weekly rates 2025/26:

Daily Living:

  • Standard rate: £72.65
  • Enhanced rate: £108.55

Mobility:

  • Standard rate: £28.70
  • Enhanced rate: £75.75

Maximum: £184.30 per week (£737.20 per month) if you get enhanced rate of both components.

Who Can Claim PIP?

You can claim PIP if:

  • You’re aged 16 to State Pension age
  • You have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability
  • You’ve had difficulties for at least 3 months
  • You expect them to last at least 9 more months (12 months total)
  • You live in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland (Scotland has Adult Disability Payment instead)

You DON’T need to:

  • Be unemployed
  • Have someone care for you
  • Have a specific diagnosis
  • Receive other benefits

What Conditions Qualify?

PIP isn’t about your diagnosis. It’s about how your condition affects your daily life.

Conditions that often qualify:

  • Chronic pain (arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain)
  • Mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, PTSD)
  • Neurological conditions (MS, Parkinson’s, epilepsy)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism or ADHD
  • Chronic fatigue (ME/CFS)
  • Mobility issues
  • Sight or hearing loss
  • Long COVID

If your condition makes daily tasks difficult more than 50% of the time, you might qualify.

How Much You’ll Get

You’re assessed on 12 activities and scored points for each:

Daily Living activities (need 8 points for standard, 12 for enhanced):

  • Preparing food
  • Eating and drinking
  • Managing therapy or medication
  • Washing and bathing
  • Managing toilet needs
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Communicating
  • Reading and understanding
  • Mixing with other people
  • Making decisions about money
  • Planning and following journeys

Mobility activities (need 8 points for standard, 12 for enhanced):

  • Planning and following journeys
  • Moving around

Each activity has descriptors worth different points based on how much help you need.

How to Apply for PIP

Step 1: Call to start your claim

PIP new claims phone line: 0800 917 2222 Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

The call takes about 20 minutes. They’ll ask:

  • Your name, address, date of birth, NI number
  • Your health conditions
  • How they affect you
  • Your doctor’s details

You can have someone with you to help.

Step 2: Fill in the PIP2 form

Within 2 weeks, you’ll get sent the “How your disability affects you” form (PIP2).

This is THE most important part of your claim. Most claims succeed or fail based on this form.

You have 1 month to return it.

How to fill it in:

For each activity:

  • Describe your worst days AND typical days
  • Be specific about what you can’t do or need help with
  • Explain how long tasks take
  • Mention if you need prompting or supervision
  • Include pain, fatigue, or mental health impacts
  • Give examples

Example of a good answer:

“I can’t prepare a meal because: I can’t stand for more than 5 minutes due to pain. I can’t grip kitchen tools safely. I’ve had several accidents with knives. On bad days I can’t even make a sandwich. My partner has to cook all my meals.”

Example of a bad answer:

“I find cooking difficult.”

Be detailed. Give examples. Don’t downplay your struggles.

Step 3: Send evidence

Include supporting evidence with your form:

  • Prescription list
  • Letters from doctors or consultants
  • Care plans
  • Diary of how your condition affects you

Don’t stress if you don’t have loads of evidence. The form itself is most important.

Step 4: Attend an assessment (maybe)

Most people have to attend a face-to-face, telephone, or video assessment with a healthcare professional.

They’ll ask you to demonstrate activities and ask questions about your condition.

Tips for the assessment:

  • Describe your worst days, not your best
  • Explain if you’re having a “good day” that day
  • Take someone with you for support
  • Don’t push through pain to prove you can do something
  • Mention how you feel AFTER doing activities (fatigue, pain)

Step 5: Wait for a decision

Decisions take 8-24 weeks (usually about 3-4 months).

You’ll get a letter explaining:

  • If you’ve been awarded PIP
  • Which components and at what rate
  • How many points you scored
  • How long your award is for

If Your Claim Is Refused

About 50% of initial PIP claims are refused. Don’t panic.

What to do:

1. Request Mandatory Reconsideration

Call within 1 month of the decision.

They’ll look at your claim again. Success rate: about 15%.

2. Appeal to a tribunal

If mandatory reconsideration fails, appeal to an independent tribunal.

Success rate at tribunal: about 75%.

Common PIP Mistakes

Mistake 1: Not being honest about bad days

People minimise their struggles because they don’t want to seem like they’re exaggerating. Don’t. Describe your reality.

Mistake 2: Focusing on what you CAN do

The form asks what you can’t do or need help with. Don’t list what you CAN do.

Mistake 3: Not mentioning mental health

Even if your main condition is physical, mention anxiety, low mood, or cognitive issues. They count.

Mistake 4: Rushing the form

Take your time. This form determines if you get £3,000-9,000+ per year. It’s worth doing properly.

Mistake 5: Not getting help

Citizens Advice, disability charities, or welfare rights advisors can help you fill in the form. Use them.

Mistake 6: Giving up after refusal

Most successful PIP claims go to tribunal. The first refusal isn’t the end.

PIP and Other Benefits

You CAN claim PIP with:

  • Universal Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • State Pension
  • Working Tax Credit/Child Tax Credit (if you still get them)

PIP doesn’t affect most other benefits. In fact, getting PIP might increase your Universal Credit.

You CAN’T claim PIP if you get:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for adults – PIP replaces this
  • Attendance Allowance (if you’re over State Pension age)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

How Long Does PIP Last?

PIP awards vary:

  • Shortest: 9 months (ongoing review)
  • Typical: 2-5 years
  • Longest: 10 years (light touch review)
  • Some: Ongoing with no review date

You’ll be told when you’re awarded how long it’s for.

PIP Reviews

Before your award ends, DWP will review your claim.

They’ll send you a review form (similar to the original PIP2 form).

Fill it in the same way as before – don’t assume they know your situation.

If your condition has worsened, explain the changes clearly.

Final Thoughts

If you have a health condition or disability that affects your daily life, you might be entitled to PIP.

Don’t think you’re not “disabled enough.” The assessment is about how your condition affects YOU, not how severe it sounds.

The application takes effort, but potentially thousands of pounds per year are at stake.

Take your time with the form. Be honest. Get help if you need it.

And if you’re refused, don’t give up. Appeal.
